Meibomian Gland Obstruction & Dry Eye Disease

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Do you know the role of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in the vicious circle of dry eye disease (DED)?
MGD is a significant cause of DED. Meibomian gland obstruction, dropout, and inflammation directly link the double vicious circles of DED. MGD is a potential entry point into the vicious cycle of DED. It leads to hyperosmolarity and inflammation, both a cause and consequence of DED.
Read this article to get the latest information on the new pathophysiological scheme for MGD that helps plan proper treatment strategies targeting the vicious cycle of DED.
Highlights:

  • Definition and classification of MGD
  • Various pathological mechanisms behind MGD
  • Importance of MGD in the vicious cycle of DED
  • Different therapeutic approaches targeting the vicious cycle of DED

PEG-PG/HPG Eye Drops: A Better Option for Squamous Metaplasia?

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Do you know polyethylene glycol-propylene glycol/hydroxypropyl guar (PEG-PG/HPG) eye drops restore ocular surface homeostasis in squamous metaplasia patients while providing symptomatic relief?
Reduced tear production in dry eye disease (DED) can promote the development of squamous metaplasia of the conjunctival epithelium. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that eye drops with PEG-PG/HPG protect the ocular surface and improve symptoms in DED patients.
Here's an article briefly introducing squamous metaplasia and explaining the role of PEG-PG/HPG artificial tears in treating the condition based on evidence from a study.

Highlights:
  • An overview of squamous metaplasia
  •  The importance of using PEG-PG/HPG eyedrops to treat the condition
  • Clinical evidence demonstrating the beneficial effects of PEG-PG/HPG eyedrops in DED patients with squamous metaplasia

Managing Diabetic Xerosis with Moisturizers

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Dry skin is common in diabetic patients, often caused by fluctuating glucose levels and a weakened skin barrier. Additionally, autonomic neuropathy may also play a role in causing dryness.1
Urea-containing moisturizers are safe and effective in xerosis management by increasing skin hydration, decreasing transepidermal water loss, and other vital mechanisms.2
Check out this Infographic explaining how moisturizers containing urea can help improve diabetic xerosis.
