It mainly manifests as loss of conjunctival cells and adversely affects the tear film and ocular surface, resulting in morphological changes, loss of goblet cells, or altered goblet cell function. Therefore, the severity of DED determines the degree of squamous metaplasia. Polyethylene glycol-propylene glycol/hydroxypropyl guar (PEG-PG/HPG) eyedrop is an artificial tear formulation that provides symptomatic relief and ocular surface protection for patients.
