Is Digital Eye Strain a New Pandemic?

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Are the global trends of excessive use of the digital screen for work and recreation resulting in a rise in the incidence of DES?
The immediate transition to the online platform to combat the pandemic conditions has resulted in an increased risk of digital eye strain (DES), which is characterized by visual and ocular discomfort that affects the ocular environment. As a result, DES is emerging as a new public health concern.
Highlights:
  • An overview of DES and the characteristics of digital devices that lead to DES.
  • The impact of digital devices on the ocular environment and how it works.
  • Study investigating the most common features of DES, along with the tips for prevention and management of DES.

Check out this Infographic to know more about the symptoms and management strategies for DES!

PEG-PG/HPG Eye Drops: A Better Option for Squamous Metaplasia?

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Do you know polyethylene glycol-propylene glycol/hydroxypropyl guar (PEG-PG/HPG) eye drops restore ocular surface homeostasis in squamous metaplasia patients while providing symptomatic relief?
Reduced tear production in dry eye disease (DED) can promote the development of squamous metaplasia of the conjunctival epithelium. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that eye drops with PEG-PG/HPG protect the ocular surface and improve symptoms in DED patients.
Here's an article briefly introducing squamous metaplasia and explaining the role of PEG-PG/HPG artificial tears in treating the condition based on evidence from a study.

Highlights:
  • An overview of squamous metaplasia
  •  The importance of using PEG-PG/HPG eyedrops to treat the condition
  • Clinical evidence demonstrating the beneficial effects of PEG-PG/HPG eyedrops in DED patients with squamous metaplasia

Treating Xerosis and Fissures with Urea-based Moisturizers

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Foot ulceration affects almost 15% of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and may lead to lower extremity amputation. DM-associated autonomic neuropathy, a risk factor for ulceration, often leads to xerosis.1
Preventive measures, including the use of moisturizers, regular foot inspection, and patient education, are recommended for xerosis in DM patients. Moisturizers containing urea, lactic acid, and glycerine have been beneficial in treating dry skin.1
Read this Journal Watch summarizing a randomized, double-blind study that demonstrated the utility of a urea-containing moisturizer in treating xerosis and fissures of the feet in people with diabetes.

Prioritizing OSD: Pre-operative DED Evaluation in Cataract Surgery

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Did you know that optimizing ocular surface disease (OSD) evaluation before cataract surgery is crucial?

The likelihood of dry eye or another OSD like allergic conjunctivitis is higher when a patient has a cataract. The mildest form of OSD can worsen post-surgery, resulting in defective vision.
Before surgery, ophthalmologists must screen for and treat pre-existing DED conditions.
Further, it is necessary to minimize intra-operative surgical factors that damage the ocular surface and plan for post-operative dry eye disease (DED) management for better outcomes.

Here's an article that shares deeper insights into the evaluation parameters of DED before cataract surgery, along with clinical study highlights.
