The Use of Digital Screens and the Risk of DED

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Do you know why digital screen users are at an increased risk of developing DED?
Prolonged use of visual display terminals (VDTs) results in dry eye disease (DED) through various etiological and pathophysiological mechanisms. The prevalence of this condition is increasing nowadays among people owing to the increased use of digital screens.
Here's a video briefly discussing DED and computer vision syndrome (CVS) and highlighting the connection between digital screen use and DED. Everything from the mechanism, diagnosis, signs, symptoms, and prevention to the treatment of these conditions, and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and goblet cell dysfunction will be discussed in this video.

Highlights -
  • DED: Definition, etiology, and clinical manifestations
  • CVS
  • Association of VDTs usage with MGD and goblet cell dysfunction
  • Prevention and treatment strategies for CVS

Dry Eye Disease: Current Treatment Options in India

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
How challenging is it to manage dry eye disease (DED) in your patients?

Although DED typically does not result in lasting damage, there are long-term hazards associated with it.
Artificial tear substitutes have long been regarded as the first-line therapy for DED. However, choosing the right formulation type is vital for both effective treatment regimes and patient safety.

This article will assist you in evaluating the current DED management options and the salient features of lipid-based artificial tears in alleviating DED symptoms.
Highlights:
  • Prevalence of DED and challenges in its management
  • The root cause of the gap between DED and its appropriate treatment
  • Currently available treatment modalities in India for DED
  • The role of lipid-containing artificial tears in DED and providing a better quality of life

Hyaluronic Acid for Dry Eye Disease: Does the Concentration Matter?

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Do you recommend HA-containing eye drops to your dry eye disease (DED) patients?
Despite introducing new DED treatments, hyaluronic acid (HA) eye drops remain a vital treatment choice for tear supplementation in patients with mild to severe DED. HA, an anionic glycosaminoglycan mainly found in connective tissue, vitreous, and aqueous humor, coats the corneal endothelium. HA effectively binds water, avoids dehydration, is biocompatible, stabilizes the precorneal tear film, and increases ocular surface irregularity. As a result, HA is essential as a lubricant component in treating DED.
Check out this infographic to know more about the impact of the different concentrations of HA on DED.

Highlights:
  • Mechanism of action of HA in DED management
  • Pros and cons of HA-containing eye drops with a high concentration
  • Clinical efficacy of low and high concentration and combination of HA eye drops for DED
