India has a DED prevalence ranging from 11.8–56.4%. DED is challenging to diagnose due to its complex etiopathogenesis, poor correlation between signs and symptoms, and lack of standardized dry eye diagnostic tests. Studies show that the adult population, especially men living in urban areas belonging to the upper socio-economic strata, are more likely to develop DED.
Comprehensive public health initiatives and various epidemiological investigations of DED utilizing a standard dry eye diagnosis guideline are needed to reduce the disease burden in India.
