Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R, Did you know that corneal nerve dysfunction can lead to dry eye progression?
Corneal sensation and the reflex arcs that control tears and blinking are essential to maintain the integrity of the tear film, which in turn protects the cornea. As a result, corneal nerves are vital to maintaining a healthy ocular surface. However, the irregular tear film in dry eyes increases the risk of injury to the cornea's epithelial and nerve layers. The resulting malfunction of the corneal nerve is a factor in the development of dry eye, ocular pain and discomfort, and other neuropathic symptoms.
Read this article to learn more about how malfunctioning of the corneal nerve results in dry eye disease (DED). |
