Does the Concentration of HA Matter in DED?

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
How important is the concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA) in DED treatment?

The corneal endothelium is coated with HA, an anionic glycosaminoglycan primarily present in connective tissue, vitreous humor, and aqueous humor. HA efficiently binds water, prevents dehydration, exhibits biocompatibility, stabilizes precorneal tear film, and enhances ocular surface irregularity. Therefore, HA plays a vital role as a lubricant component in treating DED.
Typical formulations still contain 0.1% HA, while higher concentration HA formulations are also presented.
Check out this infographic to know the detailed impact of the different concentrations of HA on DED.

Highlights:
  • Mechanism of action of HA in DED management
  • Pros and cons of eye drops with a high concentration of HA
  • Study investigating the effect of low concentration, high concentration, and combination of HA eye drops for DED
