WHO has declared a new coronavirus variant “B.1.1.529 variant” to be "of concern" and named it Omicron. Omicron coronavirus variant was first identified in South Africa on 24 November 2021, but now it has also been detected in Europe and Asia.
Early evidence suggests that this new variant is highly contagious as compared to the delta variant. It is believed that with more than 30 mutations on the spike protein, omicron could be more transmissible and be more resistance to immunity conferred by the vaccines or prior infection.
