How Does Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Cause DED ?

Hi Renukaprasad A R,
The meibomian glands are the lipid secreting glands in the eyelids that maintain tear film stability. Corneal disorders, eyelid inflammation, and microbial growth are significant causes of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which ultimately causes dry eye disease (DED) among individuals. This vicious circle gives an idea of the pathogenic mechanism that connects both MGD and DED.
Here is an article that gives an overview of the new pathophysiological scheme for MGD to identify the pathological mechanisms of DED better.
Highlights:
  • An overview of MGD and its classification
  • A synopsis of MGD pathophysiology
  • The vicious cycle in DED
  • The targeted therapeutic approaches for DED
