Is It Normal to Have DED Post Cataract Surgery?

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
What is your opinion about the effect of cataract surgeries on dry eye disease (DED) and its various symptoms?
Cataract surgery is a safe and most commonly performed surgery in ophthalmology. However, 42% of patients who undergo cataract surgery develop DED symptoms. Furthermore, several studies suggest that DED symptoms and parameters worsen during the early post-cataract surgical period, followed by subsequent improvement. Hence, there is an unmet need to conduct preoperative counselling and preventative measures, especially for those with suggestive symptoms preoperatively.
View this Infographic that highlights the effects of cataract surgery on dry eye parameters of patients with DED in the medium- to long-term post-surgical period (6 months to 5 years)!

  • Effect of cataract surgery on DED symptoms
  • Effect of cataract surgery on categorical variables
