Menopause and Dry Eyes: Understanding the Correlation

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Is dry eye associated with menopause?
Female sex hormones greatly determine the structure and functions of the cornea and the lacrimal and meibomian glands. The presence of receptors for sex hormones in these ocular structures could be the reason for this influence. Tear production in menopausal women is affected by diminished estrogen and progesterone levels. However, dry eye symptoms are only affected by decreased estrogen levels.
