Treating Xerosis and Fissures with Urea-based Moisturizers

Dear Dr. Renukaprasad A R,
Foot ulceration affects almost 15% of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and may lead to lower extremity amputation. DM-associated autonomic neuropathy, a risk factor for ulceration, often leads to xerosis.1
Preventive measures, including the use of moisturizers, regular foot inspection, and patient education, are recommended for xerosis in DM patients. Moisturizers containing urea, lactic acid, and glycerine have been beneficial in treating dry skin.1
Read this Journal Watch summarizing a randomized, double-blind study that demonstrated the utility of a urea-containing moisturizer in treating xerosis and fissures of the feet in people with diabetes.
